Representative Beth Wessel-Kroeschell of Ames gave her opening remarks during a subcommittee on HJR 6 in opposition to the marriage amendment that was introduced by House Republicans.
HJR 6 passed subcommittee, 3-1, and the full committee on a 13-8 vote. The bill will now go to the full house for consideration.

Ms. Wessel-Kroeschell,
Thank you for your opposition to this bill. I appreciate your remarks and look forward to hearing more from you.
I am a Civil Rights Investigator in Cedar Rapids and the thought of someone’s rights being trampled on in this fashion makes me very sad.
I am a married mom with two daughters and the idea that some people could be not allowed to marry the person they love is heartbreaking to me. I am “lucky” that I happen to be in love with a man and it is legal to have married him.
Please keep up all your work and passion!
My daugher, age 17, and I will be in Des Moines tomorrow evening for the Public Hearing.
Thank you again!!!
Thank you for taking a positive approach tom marriage. I know several people who consider marriage and the family as a disposable iyem. The children are the hurt ones. Put in an amendment to perserve marriages. They may be taken more seriously and then the children would grow up with two parents.
