STATEMENT FROM HOUSE DEMOCRATS ON NEW DIRECTOR OF DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES

Rep. Ruth Ann Gaines, Ranking Member of House Oversight Committee

“The biggest job for Governor Reynolds and the newly appointed Department of Human Resources (DHS) director, Kelly Kennedy Garcia, will be fixing the turmoil that Iowans continue to face in our healthcare system,  due to an ill-conceived Medicaid privatization plan. Earlier this year, one of the Managed Care Organizations (MCO) announced they were leaving Iowa and left 425,000 Iowans scrambling to pick another MCO for their health care.  The public and taxpayers have watched for years as privatized Medicaid has failed our state. It’s vital that the new director provide a smooth transition to the new MCO so our most vulnerable Iowans are provided the critical health care they deserve.

Governor Reynolds has stated she plans to go a different direction, which is welcome news if that plan is to restore oversight and accountability that protects Iowans, however that does not seem the case as we have yet to hear what those changes are, or an answer to our requests sent to her as to why the former director of DHS, Jerry Foxhoven was relieved of his position.”
