The Iowa Legislature voted this week  to extend youth wild turkey season for unused tags.

“With youth wild turkey hunting season only being a week long, many tags go unused. I introduced this legislation to let kids continue hunting into the regular season until their tag is used up,” said Ruff.

Rep. Ruff’s bill, House File 2067, is also known as “Jake’s Bill” after the constituent’s son who suggested the change.

In Iowa, residents under the age of 16 may purchase a hunting permit for youth season. That license allows each youth resident to take one wild turkey during the youth hunting week by either gun or bow. This is currently the only time of year a youth is allowed to hunt for turkey.

The bill now goes to the Senate for approval.
