Norwalk native Katie Routh announced today that she will run for the Iowa House in District 25, which includes Warren County and Madison County.  Here’s the scoop from the Des Moines Register:

Superman’s mom is running for the Iowa state legislature.

Katie Routh, a semi-retired schoolteacher from Norwalk, will run for the new 25th House District, which covers all of Madison County and part of Warren County in central Iowa.

One of Routh’s sons, Brandon Routh, is an actor who played Superman in the 2006 film “Superman Returns.”

“My son may be a movie star, but I’m an ordinary Iowan and mother of four who wants to improve life for all families in Iowa,” Routh said in a statement. “I’m excited to meet the people of District 25 at their doorsteps and hear their ideas and concerns.”

In her statement, Routh, a Democrat, said she was committed to strengthening the economy and ensuring high-quality education and health care for Iowans.

She worked for 34 years as an elementary-school teacher in the Norwalk Community School District, and was named district teacher of the year in 1994. She is now co-director of ASK Learning Center, a private alternative school in Norwalk.

The new District 25 includes much of the area now included in the 73rd District, held by Rep. Julian Garrett, R-Indianola. The district numbers and boundaries changed due to redistricting.
