Marti Anderson is a Des Moines native, eldest of Bob and Polly Anderson’s five children.
Her Dad sold farm implements, then life insurance. Her Mom was a Registered Nurse at DM General Hospital, then the Convalescent Home for Children. Marti graduated from Des Moines’ St. Joseph’s Academy in 1969. She earned her BA in social work from UNI, her MSW from the University of Iowa, and is an Iowa Licensed Independent Social Worker.
Marti Anderson lives in the Beaverdale neighborhood of Des Moines with her husband of 18 years, Bob Brammer. Her stepdaughter, Alissa, is a political researcher in Washington, DC and is engaged to Lanon Baccam. Stepson, Gabe, is an astronomer in Santiago, Chile with his wife Maca and their children, Violeta and Nico.
Marti began her social work career at Broadlawns Medical Center. She was an early volunteer and later director of Polk County Victim Services (now Crisis & Advocacy). She was the first service director at the Polk County Family Violence Center. And she helped organize Child Abuse Prevention Councils across Iowa as the first community services coordinator at what is now Prevent Child Abuse Iowa. Until retirement in June 2011, Marti she served for 22 years as founding director of Iowa Attorney General’s Crime Victim Assistance Division.
Marti is a respected Iowa and national expert in public service, management, collaboration, crime victim rights, and community organization. Her honors include the 2005 Des Moines Woman of Achievement from the Greater DM YWCA and the 2011 Cristine Wilson Medal of Equality and Justice from the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women.
