0525807rep-mccarthy-2007reducedKevin McCarthy is serving his fourth term in the Iowa House. He serves on the Administration and Rules Committee. He was elected House Majority Leader following the 2006 election.

He was born June 29, 1971.

McCarthy’s district covers Southeast Des Moines, East Des Moines and the suburb of Pleasant Hill; as well as Northern Carlisle and the Allen Township & Avon Lake areas.

Prior to being elected Majority Leader, McCarthy served as the Ranking Member of the House Public Safety Committee, which oversees Iowa’s criminal laws and homeland security issues. He also served on Transportation and Ethics Committees prior to being elected Majority Leader

McCarthy, an attorney, is a graduate of Drake Law School. He is a former Assistant Iowa Attorney General.

McCarthy’s experience also includes serving as a counsel in Washington D.C. for the Tobacco Project, which represents the fifty-two settling governments under the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. In addition, he has served as campaign manager for Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller in 1994 and 1998. After leaving the Attorney General’s Office Kevin went to work as a criminal prosecutor in the Polk County Attorney’s office. Currently, when not busy with his legislature duties, McCarthy works as an Attorney in Private Practice with the Wandro and Baer Law Firm.

McCarthy, son of Polk County Deputy Sheriff Bill McCarthy, is married to Marcy McCarthy, who is employed with Wellmark. They have a six year old daughter, Kennedy.
