Sharon Steckman is serving her 4th term in the Iowa House of Representatives. She is the Ranking Member on the House Education Standing Committee. She also serves on the Environmental Protection and State Government Standing Committees and the Education Appropriations Subcommittee. She is currently serving on the Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Advisory Council and the Midwestern Higher Education Compact. Steckman is also on the Tax Expenditure Committee.

Sharon is a longtime resident of Mason City. She was born in Chicago, IL, and grew up in Arizona, Colorado, and Nebraska.

In 1980, Sharon graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in education and began working for the Mason City Community School District, teaching second, fourth, and fifth grade and working as a Title I reading specialist. While teaching for the Mason City School District, she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in education and reading endorsement from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. She was a member of the Mason City Education Association, serving as president, and later, seven years as chief negotiator.

Sharon and Alan, her husband, have four children and eight grandchildren. She is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
