Rick Edwards was born and raised in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He is a graduate of Emmetsburg High School. He has an AA from Iowa Lakes Community College and BS in Parks, Recreation and Community Education with a Biology minor from Mankato State University.
Until recently, Rick was employed as the Parks and Recreation Director in Decorah, IA. Before that, he served as Parks Director in Emmetsburg, Recreational Therapist and eventually Director of Recreational Therapy at Brady Psychiatric Hospital in Colorado Springs, and Activity Director for Brockhurst Boys Ranch.
As Parks and Rec Director in Decorah, Edwards helped lead initiatives to expand the Decorah Parks System, expand the network of mountain bike trails, complete the Trout Run bike trail, and participate in the development of the NE Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative.
Edwards and his wife, Deb, live on a small farm in Glenwood Twp. Deb works at Decorah High School both in the nurse’s office and special education classroom. They have 5 children: Allysen Lovstuen (Nick) of rural Decorah; Sarah Frenzel (Elliot) of St Louis, MO; Erin of Minneapolis, MN; Richard of Decorah; Jacob of Decorah. They have three grandchildren and are members of First Lutheran Church of Deocrah where Edwards has served on the church council. He has also served on the Living Roadways Trust Fund Advisory Board and is involved with Pheasants Forever of Winneshiek County. He enjoys bow hunting, fly fishing and gardening in his free time.
