HeadshotJohn Greener is a retired Mid-Prairie social studies teacher, running for Iowa House District 78 representing Keokuk and Washington counties.

John Greener is active in several community organizations, including the Washington County Child Advocacy Board and Main Street Washington. He serves on the city’s Board of Adjustment, and was an active member of both the Iowa State Education Association and Mid-Prairie Education Association.

Greener’s own education began in public schools, then led to a BA in education from Parson’s College in Fairfield, followed by a MA in history from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. He later completed the requirements for a permanent professional Iowa teaching license.

During college, he worked on factory production lines and has held a number of summer positions at minimum wage, so he understands the difference between a living wage and the current minimum wage.

Greener grew up in the Chicago suburbs, the son of a traveling salesman and stay-at-home mother, attended college in Iowa, and has lived in Washington County since 1970. He and his wife Mary Patterson have four children and five grandchildren.
