The Iowa House of Representatives held a public forum to discuss House Joint Resolution 6 on January 31, 2011 at 6:30pm. More than 70 Iowans spoke against House Joint Resolution 6, which would end civil marriage in Iowa.
Many Iowans came to share their stories. Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa student who grew up with two mothers, spoke about the strength of his family.
“The sense of family comes from the commitment we make towards each other.”
House Joint Resolution 6 will be debated on the House floor at 11:00am on February 1, 2011.

Zach’s speech was awesome. It desperately needs to be reprinted–in its entirety–in the Des Moines Register.
Wow, great testimony from Zach. I agree with Matt above, his speech needs to be reprinted in its entirety in newspapers around the state.
I like how Zach brought up muscular dystrophy and other personal woes to make everyone in the chamber feel bad about what they were about to discuss. Please, stick to merits of a subject if you wish to address it in public.
Congratulations, Zach. A fine speech well worded and dynamically presented to a group of deaf individuals who can not see beyond their next election to do what is right for ALL of the people of Iowa. I was so proud of my home state when they allowed civil marriage; envious of those who could now marry wishing I had remained so I could have that right. How is it the greatest state in the greatest nation in the world can not see the error of their ways; we purport to be the leader in Human Rights, yet we are behind in gay rights in comparison to many other countries in the world. How sad for America. How shameful.
