Iowans packed a special public hearing at the State Capitol tonight and overwhelmingly opposed a Republican school funding plan. Aside from the Governor’s Office, just one Iowan spoke in support of the Republican plan.
“It’s telling that only one person spoke in favor of the Republican plan at the public hearing tonight,” said State Rep. Patti Ruff, Ranking Member of the House Education Committee. “We heard time and time again tonight that the school funding plan offered by the Governor and Republicans will shortchange our kids and Iowa’s future. I hope Republicans were listening tonight. We have to do better.”
The Iowa House is expected to debate K-12 school funding tomorrow. The Republican plan provides only a 1.25% increase in supplemental aid next school year, which would be the 3rd lowest on record and drop Iowa to 40th nationally in per student state funding.
