Gretchen Lawyer (D-Marion) has been endorsed by the Cedar Rapids Gazette:

Voters have a tough choice in District 36 between Republican Nick Wagner, an electrical contractor and former Marion City Council member, and Marion Democrat Gretchen Lawyer, a former teacher. Although we liked Wagner’s commitment to fiscal discipline, Lawyer showed a better big picture command of several issues and gets our endorsement.

Lawyer’s experience in the classroom has shaped her call for more innovation in public schools, particularly with an eye on the skills student swill need in a competitive global economy. She argues that Iowa’s Jumpstart program for flood assistance is just a start and that the state should readjust its budget to find more relief dollars. She would shield schools, economic development and health care from deep reductions.

Lawyer said she’s willing to explore new sources of revenue for local governments but only if voters have the final say. She agrees that the state should do more to enforce open meetings and records laws and that government can have a positive role in developing alternative energy use, especially wind power.
