Karen A. Larson will formally announce her candidacy to win the seat for the Iowa House of Representatives District 1 in Spirit Lake, Iowa on Tuesday, February 20th. The announcement will take place in the Spirit Lake Library Community Room at 702 16th St. in Spirit Lake at 6:30 pm. Iowa House District 1 includes Lyon county, Osceola county, and parts of Dickinson county.
“I’ve spent my life teaching students the value of communication so that people of differing perspectives can understand each other. We need more of that in our politics today. Our culture has moved too far away from cooperation and mutual respect. It’s time to fix that with more honest conversation and less partisanship.”
Dr. Larson became Professor Emerita as she retired to Spirit Lake in 2012, after teaching cultural anthropology at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota for 35 years. She is a lifelong Lutheran. She has done field research in Europe, North America, and Asia, acted as a terrorism consultant for the federal government, and instructed at her own martial arts school. Larson is the proud mom of two grown children, Christopher and Laura.
Her campaign theme is “Centered on Community.” Her concern is to support vibrant Iowa communities built on reliable health care, good education, and thriving local businesses with good jobs.
“Such communities can carry traditional Iowa values of neighborliness, mutual regard, and open communication into the future. I see Iowa’s State Legislature-its political center-as one of those communities, a place where keeping traditional values can improve our state. I’m ready to go to Des Moines to work for the voters of House District 1.”
