Private sector jobs on Iowa transportation projects are 30% higher, or 1,200, over last year thanks to federal stimulus funds injected into the Iowa economy earlier this year.  According to a new report from the Iowa Department of Transportation, there were 5,268 private sector workers on DOT projects during July 2009 compared to only 4,005 in July, 2008.

The number of construction jobs is the highest since 2001.

“Iowa ranks second in the nation in the speed with which we put the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act highway funds to use. We felt like we were making a difference by getting these funds injected quickly into Iowa’s road construction industry. This data confirms just that. These funds directly impacted the level of employment and Iowa’s dedication to getting projects moving forward quickly helped bring people back to work,” said Iowa DOT Director Nancy Richardson.
