The Iowa House Environmental Protection Committee heard about Iowa’s program to help rural cities and counties demolish or renovate abandoned commercial and public buildings.

Iowa has a $400,000 a year derelict building grant program that rural communities less than 5,000 can apply.  Since the Legislature established the program in 2011, the program has saved cities and counties over $622,000 by not having to send the building materials to their landfills.  Cities and counties have to put up a match, but the match can be lowered if they divert more of the materials from going into the landfill.  The moneys can be used for deconstruction, renovation, and asbestos abatement.
