Kristin Keast, an elementary teacher of Mt. Vernon is committed to live, work, and serve in the state of Iowa. Her roots run deep in the state as a fifth generation Iowan. Kristin was born and raised in Southwest Iowa on the family farm near Griswold.  Her parents, Randall and Phyllis Baier still live there. She has three brothers.

Kristin graduated in 1979 from Griswold Community and was a 10 year 4-H member. All four siblings completed college and graduate degrees, honoring the belief of Randall and Phyllis that a good education was necessary to be a well-rounded citizen.

Kristin received her bachelor degree in Music Education from Westmar College in LeMars.  She went on to her Master’s degree at Iowa University. Kristin has been teaching in the classroom 25 years and currently teaches elementary music in Mount Vernon.

Kristin received her National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification in 2005 and has continued her dedication to teaching by mentoring new candidates and leading scoring groups for NBPTS. She sees it as just one way to serve her neighbors and her profession. Kristin is a member of her local education association and serves on Negotiations and as Governmental Affairs chair. Active in ISEA, she has facilitated NBPTS classes, member-chaired the Support for Public Education Committee at the state level and was member and past president of East Central Uniserv Board.

Kristin, her husband Craig, and three children came to Mount Vernon, Iowa in 1991.  The move east was prompted by her husband’s work, but they determined Iowa was where they wanted to stay and raise their three children. They took part in Linn County 4-H and Kristi was a project leader and club leader during that time.

Kristin is a church musician at Mount Vernon United Methodist, serving as vocalist and instrumentalist. She also directs bells and children’s choir there. She continues her musical avocation by participating in local musical pit bands and summer community band. Kristin loves to read and is a member of the Entre Nous Book Club. She is an avid gardener and member of Twin City Bloomers Garden Club.  Kristin is a member of her local PEO Chapter, DT.
