Steve Bomgaars was born in Sioux City, Iowa on March 30, 1953 to parents Arv and Ruby Bomgaars. His parents moved to Spencer, Iowa where he spent his childhood. He and his wife, Marti – an Occupational Therapist for Prairie Lakes AEA, are both proud graduates of Spencer High School. Steve graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with a B.A. in Political Science in 1976 and received his M.A. in Secondary Guidance and Counseling from the University of Northern Iowa in 1989.

Steve has been a teacher for 35 years, teaching Advanced Placement Government & Politics, American Government, and U.S. History at Spencer High School since 1980. In addition to teaching he is also the Spencer Boys Golf coach and has seen his teams win numerous Lakes Conference titles as well as make 9 State Tournament appearances including 3 runner-up finishes.

Steve and Marti are proud parents of two daughters, Karah and Liz, as well as proud grandparents of 2 grandchildren – Charlie and Nora. Karah lives in Grundy Center with her husband Mason and son Charlie. Liz and her husband, Ryan, reside in DeKalb, Illinois.

Steve is also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a board member of the Spencer Community Schools Foundation. He was elected to the Spencer City Council in 2004 and has served the citizens of Spencer for the past 8 years.

Steve and Marti both enjoy reading, traveling, golf, recreational biking, and visiting the grandchildren.
