Starting soon teachers will receive training to help identify and support students suffering from dyslexia under a bill approved this year.
Under Senate File 2319, Iowa’s Reading Research Center is required to coordinate the training with Area Education Agencies at no cost to school districts to enhance teaching skills in the use of evidenced-based strategies. The education budget bill provides funding to implement the free training.
The reading assistance in the legislation includes strategies to address dyslexia, which for the first time, is defined in Iowa law.
Representative Sharon Steckman ( D- Mason City) and Representative Scott Ourth (D- Ackworth) welcomed the group Decoding Dyslexia, who helped get legislation passed through the Iowa House to bring more attention to dyslexia in Iowa schools.
