Iowa’s Wind Power Ranking Remains Second in the Nation

According to a new report released by the American Wind Energy Association, Iowa holds onto its second in nation wind energy production spot. Iowa, behind Texas, produces 4,322 megawatts a year and accounted for 35 percent of new electricity generated in the U.S, behind the 42 percent that came from natural gas.

Iowa Leads Nation in Percentage of Energy Used Generated by Wind

The ongoing mission to establish Iowa as a leader in renewable energy received further confirmation as the American Wind Energy Association released its year-end report for 2009. According to AWEA, Iowa leads the nation by generating 14 percent of all of the electricity consumed in the state with wind.

According to the AWEA report, Iowa added 879 megawatts of generational capacity in 2009, an impressive gain in an otherwise stagnant economy. Today, Iowa ranks second in the nation in total generation with 3,670 MW from 2,534 turbines. The national leader in overall production continues to be Texas.

Iowa leads the nation in wind energy jobs and, because of the state’s position, hosts nine international companies manufacturing for the wind industry, with more than 200 manufacturers in the wind power supply chain, employing more than 2,300 Iowans. Additionally, five community colleges and all three Regents institutions have formed the Iowa Alliance for Wind Innovation and Novel Development (IAWIND), a consortium focused on growing the industry and creating further career opportunities.

Iowa Stays at #2 in Wind Power

turbineIowa held on to the #2 spot for wind energy production in a new report from the American Wind Energy Association released this week.  Iowa added 160 megawatts of capacity last quarter to bring total wind energy production in Iowa over 3,000 MW for the first time, which is enough to power over 900,000 homes.

In an effort to make Iowa an energy independent state, the Legislature approved several measures last session to expand renewable energy production, including: expanded tax credits for renewable energy research, incentives to encourage small wind energy production, creation of Wind Innovation Zones, and continued support of the Iowa Power Fund.   (more…)

Pres. Obama’s Earth Day Visit to Iowa

President Obama made an Earth Day visit to Iowa on Wednesday to talk about energy.  He visited Trinity Structural Towers in Newton, which manufactures wind towers.  The President’s visit highlights the work Iowa has done over the last three years to lead the world in renewable energy.

Through the $100 million Iowa Power Fund and other initiatives, Iowa has created over 2,300 “green” jobs and is now 2nd in the nation in wind energy, 1st in the nation in ethanol production, and 2nd in the nation in biodiesel production.

Wind Energy & Jobs

0525807rep-lensing-2007reducedThe Iowa House of Representatives today approved a wind energy package designed to create more jobs and encourage more renewable energy production. The bills approved today will expand wind energy production and renewable energy tax credits, create wind innovation zones, and encourage more renewable energy research in Iowa.

“Over the last two years, Iowa has become a world leader in renewable energy and created thousands of ‘green’ jobs across our state,” said State Representative Vicki Lensing, D-Iowa City, who won approval of Senate File 456. “The package we approved today will expand our wind energy efforts to encourage more small wind production by individuals, schools, hospitals and universities.” (more…)
