2009 Legislature Opens on Monday, Jan. 12th

The 83rd General Assembly opens on Monday, January 12th, 2009 at 10 a.m.  Democrats have control of both chambers of the Iowa Legislature with a 56-44 advantage in the House and a 32-18 split in the Senate.

Here’s a fact sheet on the Iowa House of Representatives.  Highlights include 18 new State Representatives and record six African-Americans serving in the House.

Vets Job Security Bill Moves to the Senate

The Iowa House unanimously approved a job security bill for Iowa veterans on Thursday morning.  The bill, House File 2065, ensures that soldiers called to active duty can return to their jobs after service at the same pay and status level.  The bill was sponsored by State Representative McKinley Bailey, D-Webster City.  The bill now goes to the Senate.
