A new “Iowans Helping Iowans” flood assistance program was rolled out today. The program is meant to help families and businesses get back on their feet after this summer’s floods. Up to $7.5 million will be provided for homeowner assistance, up to $7.5 million for business assistance, and up to $5 million for unmet needs totaling up to $20 million.
Anyone affected by the natural disasters in a county that has been Presidentially Declared for Individual Assistance is eligible for the “Iowans Helping Iowans” program. This includes the following 32 counties: Black Hawk, Cherokee, Clayton, Decatur, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Howard, Humboldt, Ida, Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Lucas, Lyon, Mahaska, Marion, O’Brien, Osceola, Polk, Ringgold, Sioux, Story, Taylor, Union, Warren, Webster, and Wright.
Homeowners must first register with FEMA and be awarded some form of FEMA housing assistance to be eligible for “Iowans Helping Iowans”. Businesses must first be approved for a disaster-related loan by eligible lender, including conventional lenders, to be eligible for “Iowans Helping Iowans”. The Obama Administration announced today that Iowa will receive two National Emergency Grants for Iowa communities suffering from recent layoffs. The announcement was made by US Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis in a visit to Iowa and funding comes from federal stimulus package signed by President Obama in February (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).
Northwest Iowa will receive over $664,000 to help workers who lost their jobs due to the closure of RR Donnelley in Spencer find new jobs.
Northeast Iowa will receive $335,853 to help 125 workers displaced by the closure of Atwood Mobil in West Union find new jobs. (more…)

Thanks to creation of the Iowa Power Fund and Office of Energy Indepedence two years ago, Iowa is one of the first states in the nation to receive $16 million from President Obama for renewable energy and energy efficiency efforts.
The U.S. Secretary of Energy came to Iowa to make the announcement on Monday. The $16 million is the first installment of federal recovery funds for energy that will total about $40 million. (more…)

President Obama made an Earth Day visit to Iowa on Wednesday to talk about energy. He visited Trinity Structural Towers in Newton, which manufactures wind towers. The President’s visit highlights the work Iowa has done over the last three years to lead the world in renewable energy.
Through the $100 million Iowa Power Fund and other initiatives, Iowa has created over 2,300 “green” jobs and is now 2nd in the nation in wind energy, 1st in the nation in ethanol production, and 2nd in the nation in biodiesel production.
