Iowa Guard gets Federal $$ for New Projects

From the Chicago Tribune/AP:

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Construction on two Iowa Army National Guard facilities and an undersized Iowa Air National Guard building are expected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs.

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved more than $10 million for the three Iowa facilities last week. Confirmation from the full Senate could come by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

The construction will include work on a 35-year-old Armed Forces Reserve Center in Davenport, the Security Forces Facility in Des Moines and a building that houses administrative staff for the National Guard in Johnston.

Polling Review: Energy, the Environment, and Jobs

485-1Great post over at Daily Kos from the excellent Meteor Blades.  They regularly have great material discussing the way we “talk” about the environment and energy security.  Iowa is at the forefront of this effort with our committment to renewable fuels and wind energy development leading the way.  They talk about an article in the Columbia Journalism Review – “The Price is Right: Energy Edition”:

Monday morning, President Barack Obama signed two executive orders to spur an economic recovery plan founded upon clean energy and environmental protection. It is a move that is sure to please the many journalists who long ago realized that the success of sustainability goals would ultimately depend on strong financial incentives.

A poll released last week by the Pew Research Center found that addressing the nation’s energy problems ranks sixth among a list of twenty voter concerns, with sixty percent of those polled agreeing that it should be a “top priority” for government. On the other hand, concern for protecting the environment and dealing with global warming has declined precipitously in the last few years, with those issues ranking seventeenth and dead last, respectively. The takeaway message for journalists is that those “stewardship” frames will not be sufficient in terms of galvanizing support for clean energy. In the pursuit of public engagement, the press would be better advised to link sustainability issues to economic growth and “green” jobs.

Dems Focus on Economy; 500,000 Iowans to see lower taxes

“We made great strides last year expanding our job creation efforts by focusing on targeted industries like advanced manufacturing, information solutions, life sciences and alternative energy. We will continue our focus this year on creating good-paying jobs that help middle class families.  Around 500,000 Iowans will also benefit from a lower state tax bill as they fill out their 2007 tax returns in the coming months.” — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Some of the initiates to help middle class families include:

  • 64,000 working families will receive a larger tax refund this year after a $10 million expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which also made the credit refundable. Iowans with questions about the EITC can call 800-367-3388. (Senate File 590, 2007)
  • 430,000 seniors will find a reduction in their state income taxes. Iowans over 65 will see a 32% decrease in taxes on social security income and won’t pay any state tax on the first $18,000 ($24,000 for couples) of other income (Senate File 2408, 2006)
  • Minimum wage rose on January 1 to $7.25 and 257,000 Iowans will benefit (House File 1, 2007) (more…)
