Legislative Council Approves 10 Interim Study Committees

The Iowa Legislative Council met on Thursday, June 12 and approved 10 interim study committees that will report to the Legislature before the 2009 legislative session begins in January.  The Council is chaired by House Speaker Pat Murphy of Dubuque. 

1. Criminal Code Reorganization Study Committee
Charge: Meet during the 2007 and 2008 interims to consider proposals for Criminal Code revisions, reorganization, and updates.
Meeting Days: 2 days for 2008

2. Legislative Property Tax Study Committee (2007 Iowa Acts, SF 601, §127)
Charge: The Legislative Property Tax Study Committee is established for the 2007 and 2008 Legislative Interims to perform a comprehensive review of the property tax system. The study committee may contract for analysis or other services. The cost for such contracting shall not exceed $150,000.

Health Care for Kids, Balanced Budget Highlight 2008 Session

The 2008 legislative session adjourned for the year last week with a fiscally responsible, balanced budget and continued progress in health care, education and good-paying jobs highlighted by Democratic Leaders.

“We produced a balanced state budget with a modest 4.5 percent increase over last year. Our state savings accounts are full and at the highest level in Iowa history. We have also repaid $263 million of the $300 million we owe to the Senior Living Trust Fund,” said House Speaker Pat Murphy of Dubuque. “Democrats pledged to produce a fiscally responsible budget again this year and we kept our promise using sound budgeting principles.” (more…)

Generation Iowa Makes Recommendations

The Generation Iowa Commission released their recommendations today to keep more young people in Iowa.  The commission was created by the 2007 Legislature after a record number of young people took office in the Iowa House of Representatives. 

State Representatives Elesha Gayman of Davenport, Andrew Wenthe of Hawkeye, McKinley Bailey of Webster City, and Tyler Olson of Cedar Rapids, are all 30 years old or younger and sponsored the Generation Iowa bill.
