State Representative Chris Hall of Sioux City has been appointed to serve as Ranking Member of the House Economic Development Appropriations Committee for the 2012 legislative session.
“Rep. Hall is committed to creating new opportunities and bringing good-paying jobs to Sioux City and across our state. Working with the head of the new Economic Development Authority Debi Durham, Hall will make sure Sioux City is well served in the state’s job creation efforts next year,” said House Democratic Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“Chris has a reputation for working across party lines and advocating for our community in Des Moines. This is a positive step for Sioux City,” said Dave Bernstein, a Sioux City businessman who is Vice Chair of the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board.
In addition to serving as Ranking Member, Hall will also serve on Appropriations, Economic Growth & Rebuild Iowa, Natural Resources and Transportation committees.
“Growing our economy and putting Iowans back to work is my top priority and I’m proud to be chosen to help lead the Economic Development Appropriations Committee. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move our state forward,” said Hall.
The 2012 legislative session starts on January 9th.

Private sector jobs on Iowa transportation projects are 30% higher, or 1,200, over last year thanks to federal stimulus funds injected into the Iowa economy earlier this year. According to a new report from the Iowa Department of Transportation, there were 5,268 private sector workers on DOT projects during July 2009 compared to only 4,005 in July, 2008.
The number of construction jobs is the highest since 2001.

In an effort to create new jobs and help Iowans rebuild from the 2008 storms, the Iowa Legislature approved a major expansion of the historic preservation tax credit prorgram. Funding increased this year from $20 million to $50 million for the next three years to encourage redevelopment of historic properties across Iowa. CLICK HERE TO APPLY NOW! Applications are due August 7, 2009.

The program provides a state income tax credit of 25 percent of qualified rehabilitation costs for historic buildings. Owners of historic properties and developers use the tax credit to leverage private investment in adaptive reuse and preservation of Iowa’s historic buildings. Beginning Wednesday, July 1, 2009, funding for the program increases from $20 million to $50 million per year. (more…)

Governor Chet Culver announced today that Iowa received an additional $11.6 million to put over 2,000 Iowans back to work rebuilding parks, infrastructure and public facilities damaged by last summer’s devastating storms. The money comes from the National Emergency Grant program and Iowa initially received $17.1 million. To apply for one of the positions, Iowans should contact their local workforce development office.

Administered through Iowa Workforce Development, the grant provides assistance to Iowans. The grant is primarily designed to assist with putting unemployed Iowans back to work rebuilding the state’s public facilities, infrastructure and parks. Each individual is eligible to receive up to $12,000 in wages for participating in the clean-up efforts and the wages are paid at a rate that significantly exceeds unemployment insurance compensation rates. The grant targets the counties declared eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance Program during the summer of 2008. (more…)

The Iowa House has approved a major expansion of a historic rehabilitation program used in communities across Iowa. The bill, Senate File 481, will help revitalize towns and create good-paying jobs through a state income tax credit for historic preservation of buildings.
“I came to the Capitol to work for jobs – jobs for my constituents in Mason City and for all middle class families. In Iowa who are struggling to make ends meet, to make house payments, to pay for health care and to put food on the table. These Historic Preservation Tax Credits will create jobs,” said State Representative Sharon Steckman of Mason City, who won approval of the bill in the House. (more…)
