Biography
Kevin McCarthy was just elected to his 5th term in the Iowa House of Representatives and is now beginning his 1st term as House Minority Leader.
McCarthy’s current district covers Southeast Des Moines, East Des Moines and the suburb of Pleasant Hill; as well as Northern Carlisle and the Allen Township & Avon Lake areas.
From 2007-2010, Representative McCarthy served as the Iowa House Majority Leader. McCarthy served as the Ranking Member of the House Public Safety Committee. He also served on the Transportation and Ethics Committees.
McCarthy, an attorney, is a graduate of Drake Law School. Following law school, he served as a former Assistant Iowa Attorney General.
McCarthy’s experience also includes serving as a counsel in Washington D.C. for the Tobacco Project at the National Association of Attorneys General, which represents the fifty-two settling governments under the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. After leaving the Attorney General’s Office Kevin went to work as a criminal prosecutor in the Polk County Attorney’s office. Currently, Kevin is an attorney in private practice.
McCarthy, son of Polk County Sheriff Bill McCarthy, is married to Marcy McCarthy, who is employed with Wellmark. They have a nine year old daughter, Kennedy.

Two comments for you and your colleagues: First, do not, under any circumstance, allow Mid-American Energy have its way with asking customers to prepay on the construction of a nuclear power plant.
Second, scuttle, in any way possible, the governor’s corporate tax reduction proposal. Iowa is already competitive from a business point of view, and passage of the governor’s proposal will have significant negative impacts on county and municipal budgets.
