Mount Vernon, Iowa – Public works employee Christian Andrews announced today that he will seek election as State Representative in House District 95, which includes parts of Linn and Buchanan counties. The seat is currently held by Rep. Louie Zumbach of Coggon.
“Now, more than ever, the voice of Iowa workers and their families must be heard at the state level,” said Andrews, who is a member of the Teamsters local 238. “Iowans work hard to support themselves and their families, and I understand the importance of having a good job with good benefits. We need to make sure hardworking Iowa families have job opportunities, affordable and accessible health care, and a strong public education system for their kids.”
Andrews has worked for the City of Mount Vernon for the last three years and has been a resident of Mount Vernon for almost five years. He and his family moved to the area in 2013 and he began volunteering for various community development projects and coaching recreational league baseball. Andrews won a Volunteer of the Month Award in May of 2017 for work he did building a portable photo booth as a fundraising project to bring the Smithsonian “Hometown Teams” exhibit to Mount Vernon.
Prior to moving to Mount Vernon, Andrews owned a small business in Cedar Falls, Iowa, specializing in remodeling and carpentry work. He and his wife and partner of 24 years, Mariah Andrews, helped to found the education advocacy group Unify for Education, to encourage the Iowa state legislature and Iowa Board of Regents to institute a public comment period during Regents’ meetings.
“I’ve always enjoyed helping in any way that I can to make my community a better place to work, live and grow,” said Andrews. “I’m running now to help all Iowans in my district and across the state. I will be a voice for local workers, for parents, for small business owners and for everyday Iowans because that’s who I am. Every day I go to work for the citizens of Mount Vernon, and I’m ready to work for District 95. I will bring people together and work to ensure we have excellent education from pre-K through trade school or college, access to quality healthcare and a strong commitment to support local businesses that provide good jobs.”
