Abby Finkenauer

Abby Finkenauer grew up in Northeast Iowa, the daughter of a Union Pipefitter Welder and a 17-year Dubuque Community Schools employee. She is a graduate of Hempstead High School in Dubuque, IA, and Drake University in Des Moines. She was taught at a very early age that in a working class household, you must say, “Yes,” to every opportunity and when there was work to be done, you do it. Her late grandfather, a Dubuque Lt. Firefighter, instilled the importance of public service and giving back to the community. These values lead Finkenauer to be chosen as a Congressional Page for the US House of Representatives, Speaker’s Page for the Iowa House of Representatives under then Speaker Pat Murphy, and a Legislative Assistant for two years also in the Iowa House. Through these experiences she became aware of the value of state government and stayed involved in the process as she went on to work as the State of Iowa Volunteer Coordinator for VP Biden’s presidential campaign in 2007.

In 2013, Abby said, “Yes,” to the opportunity to run for a seat in the House where she had served as both a Page and Legislative Assistant. After a 600 day campaign, Abby won the race for Iowa House District 99. As a State Legislator, Abby has put her time and focus into expanding worker’s rights, fighting to protect and encourage Iowa’s students from pre-school to college, and ensuring equality for all Iowans. Outside of the Legislature, Abby works to keep all Iowans, especially young people, engaged and involved in politics to better their communities, and Iowa.
