State Representative Mary Mascher is currently serving her eleventh term in the Iowa House. She serves on the Education, Local Government, State Government, and Appropriations Committees.
Mary was born in Iowa City and grew up on her family’s century farm, which is located in rural Johnson County. She started school in Cosgrove and went to Regina Catholic High School in Iowa City, where she was elected junior class president.
After graduation in 1970, Mary continued her Catholic education at Ottumwa Heights Junior College. She then entered the University of Iowa and graduated four years later with a degree in elementary education. She has since earned a master’s degree in counseling education form the University of Iowa and worked as a counselor at Roosevelt Elementary. After teaching for 33 years in Iowa City schools, Mary retired from teaching in June 2009.
Mascher has been actively involved with the community. She helped establish the first girl’s softball league in Iowa City in 1988 and served as treasurer on its board of directors.
She served on the board of directors for the Iowa City Community Theater, Iowa City Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Iowa City Riverfront Commission and was president of the Iowa City Education Association. Rep. Mascher has one grown son and two grandchildren.
