Rita DeJong is a community leader, mother of two, wife, lifelong Iowan, and former educator from Sioux City. Rita has lived and worked in Northwest Iowa her whole life, investing in future generations by uniting families, students, and community.
Rita was with the Sioux City Community School District for 34 years, first as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher for 11 years and then later in a larger leadership role with the community as a Principal of Sioux City Community School District for 21 years.
Rita was recognized as the 1994 Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa. After her retirement from Sioux City Schools, Rita continued to improve the lives of younger generations with her work at BOOST (Bridging and Overcoming Obstacles through Service and Training) and SHIP (Siouxland Human Investment Partnership) serving Woodbury and Dakota counties.
Rita and her husband, Dan are the parents of two children, Maria and Lewis. Dan was also a long-time educator and coach; he and Rita share a love of teaching.Over the last 50 years, Rita served the Siouxland community outside of education. She served as a president of Sertoma and the Junior League of Sioux City and aided the Sioux Gateway Airport as a trustee. In addition, Rita serves on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girl’s Home and Family Services, and Ballet Sioux. She volunteers with the Soup Kitchen, Foodbank of Siouxland, Siouxland Youth for Christ, and Habitat for Humanity. Rita was distinguished as Sertoman of the Year and a Woman of Excellence in the category of Women Helping Women.
