Iowa House District 37
Andrew Rasmussen has been a middle school social studies teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools for 23 years. He has lived in Ankeny for 25 years. Andrew is married to April Hayes and he has three step kids, all teenagers in the Ankeny school system, and a 7 month old son.
During the past 6 years, Andrew has served as the elected president of his local teachers union, the Des Moines Education Association, where he has been a strong advocate for education professionals, students, and public schools. He grew up in western Iowa, living on a family farm and then in the small town of Harlan where he graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1987. Andrew has a bachelors degree in political science from the University of Iowa.
He decided to run because he wants to be a strong advocate for public schools, unions, and working families in Iowa. He is very concerned with the extreme actions of the current legislative majority, from gutting collective bargaining to attacks on women's reproductive rights, and wants to return Iowa to its more moderate traditions where legislators work together to get things done for all Iowans.
