MANNING, IA – Peter Leo, 33, a local attorney and resident of Manning, has joined the District Twelve race for the Iowa House of Representatives. District twelve is made up of Audubon, Carroll and eastern Crawford counties.
A third-generation Iowan, Leo grew up in West Des Moines and is a 2006 graduate of Grinnell College. He earned his law degree from Drake University in 2010, and has since practiced law in Sioux City, Omaha, and Denison. He is a married father of two boys, Eric (7) and Samuel (5), and his wife, Elizabeth, is a special education associate at Broadway Elementary in Denison.
“At a time when many young people are moving away from rural areas to pursue careers in larger cities, people often ask us why our family chose to relocate to Manning a year ago,” Leo said. “The answer is, Elizabeth and I saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our family. We wanted our boys to grow up surrounded by a close-knit group of friends and neighbors who are proud of their community and who care about its future. There is also an urgent need for more young lawyers in rural areas, so it was a great fit for me professionally. We made the move, and we instantly fell in love with west central Iowa.”
Leo says his passion for helping others solve complex problems is what motivated him to seek election to the Iowa House. “When my kids ask me what I do for a living, I tell them, ‘Dad is a professional problem solver.’ That same description ought to apply to our elected officials. Right now, our state’s finances are in bad shape and it is causing real suffering across Iowa. But instead of working to build consensus on how to solve the problems we all agree exist, folks at the state house think the interests of their campaign donors or their political party deserve higher priority. As an attorney, it is my responsibility to put my clients’ best interests before my own. I intend to take that approach with me to the state house and get our state government’s focus back where it belongs: On providing twenty-first century facilities, technology, and opportunities for all of our K-12 students, on harnessing the innovation and creativity of our community colleges and state universities to help diversify and grow our state’s economy, and on making sure no Iowan goes without health care.”
A formal campaign kick-off event will be scheduled in the coming weeks. In the meantime, anyone interested in learning more about Leo’s campaign may go to www.PeopleforPeter.com. “I look forward to meeting folks, hearing their concerns, and finding out how I can best represent them.”
