The Skilled Worker Shortage Committee wrapped up work today with a series of recommedations for the 2008 Legislature to consider. The goal of the committee, which was co-chaired by State Representative Roger Thomas and formed at the request of State Representative Art Staed of Cedar Rapids, was to consider educational system improvements and other options to the looming shortages of skilled workers in Iowa.
Recommendations include expanded partnerships, increased graduation rates, more worker training, and additional worker recruitment. Here’s the full list of committee recommendations:

House Speaker Pat Murphy of Dubuque has appointed State Representative Tyler Olson of Cedar Rapids as chair of the Health Care Services subcommittee that will examine ways to make health care more affordable for small businesses.
“Businesses large and small are struggling with the competitive disadvantage of rising health care costs that often get passed on to employees. I look forward to building on our association health plan legislation passed in 2007 by listening to consumers, businesses and health care leaders,” said Olson. (more…)
