HOUSE APPROVES NEW PROTECTIONS FOR IDENTITY THEFTThe Iowa House today approved a security freeze and requirement for businesses and government entities to notify Iowa consumers of a security breach of their personal information.

“In today’s high-tech world, Iowans need additional protections from identity theft. In 2007 alone, 127 million credit card holders were affected by security breaches and a victim of identity theft spends, on average, 175 hours and $808 to correct the situation. I’m confident that the bills we approved today will help consumers protect their personal information and prevent identity theft,” said State Representative Doris Kelley, D-Waterloo, who managed the bill in the House. Ensuring Every Vote Counts04.01.08

SF 2347 Bill SigningIowa Governor Chet Culver signed Senate File 2347 into law today. The bill, which costs $4.6 million, will ensure a verified paper trail for every vote cast in the November 2008 election.  The bill was managed in House by State Representative Dennis Cohoon, D-Burlington.

Week 11 Review03.28.08

Agriculture

HF 2551 Aerial Applicator Licenses. Allows the department of agriculture to set rules for out of state applicators. Also eliminates the option for an out of state applicator to operate without a commercial license and to operate under Iowa supervision. (passed House 97-0) to Senate Agriculture Committee

HF 2553 Per Diem Compensation for Iowa Soybean Board. Codifies per diem of the board to be $100 instead of set in rule. (passed House 94-1) to Senate Agriculture Committee

HF 2554 Drainage District Thresholds. Raises the ceiling amount that a drainage district board can utilize for minor repairs or improvements by $5000 from $15,000 to $20,000 that is accessed out of the secondary road fund. (passed House 94-2) to Senate Agriculture Committee

“These measures will continue the progress we’ve made in renewable energy and move us a closer to our goal of energy independence,” said State Representative Donovan Olson, Boone, the chair of the House Environmental Protection Committee. “From good-paying jobs to a cleaner environment to added value to our agricultural products, renewable energy and energy efficiency efforts are good for our state.” (more…)
