House Approves $16 Million for REAP04.08.08

Rep. Mark KuhnLed by State Representative Mark Kuhn, D-Charles City, the Iowa House approved a record $16 million for Iowa’s Resource Enhancement and Protection program (REAP) today.  REAP partners with local communities to help clean the environment, protect natural resources and expand recreational opportunities.

The money approved for REAP is a $500,000 increase over last year and the highest amount since 1991. Continuing the progress from last year, the House also approved $40 million for the Environment First Fund, funded the Vet Diagnostic Lab at Iowa State University, and continued support to combat agroterrorism.

The bill, House File 2662, now goes to the Senate for consideration.

House Approves Smoking Compromise04.08.08

Rep. Tyler Olson during debate on HF 2212On a bi-partisan 54-45 vote, the Iowa House approved a compromise crafted by House and Senate negotiators last night to ban smoking and protect 99% of Iowa workers.  

House File 2212 has some exemptions to the smoking ban, including fairgrounds, the Iowa Veterans Home, National Guard facilities, correctional facilities, farm tractors or trucks, and outdoor areas, like bar patios.

The bill, which was managed by State Representative Tyler Olson, D-Cedar Rapids, now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Smoking Conference Committee Crafts Proposal04.07.08

The conference committee on the Smokefree Air Act (House File 2212) met on Monday and crafted a comprise to be considered by the full House as soon as Tuesday. 

Chaired in the House by State Representative Tyler Olson (D-Cedar Rapids), the compromise includes a statewide ban on smoking in with the following exemptions: private clubs, casino floors, fairgrounds, private homes, private vehicles, tractors or hotels. (more…)

Week 12 Review04.04.08

Appropriations

SF 2400 Administration and Regulation Budget. Appropriates $95.6 million to several agencies of state government including: Department of Administrative Services, Audi-tor of State, Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, Department of Commerce, Gov-ernor’s office, Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, Department of Human Rights, Department of Inspections and Appeals, Department of Management, Depart-ment of Revenue, Secretary of State, State Treasurer. This bill appropriates $695,000 less than estimated FY 08. (Passed Committee 14-11) to House Calendar

HF 2654 Water Use Permit Fees. Allows the Department of Natural Resources to charge an annual fee to a person who has been granted a permit for diverting, storing, or allocat-ing water. House Honors ISU’s 150th Anniversary04.03.08

ISU President Geoffrey and Iowa House Honor 150th AnniversaryOn Thursday the Iowa House honored Iowa State University on their 150th anniversary. State Representatives  Lisa Heddens, Beth Wessel-Kroeschell and Donovan Olson  introduced House Resolution number 140 in the House.  The resolution, which celebrates Iowa State University’s 150th anniversary, was adopted. ISU President Gregory Geoffrey addressed the body after the adoption and met with legislators and staff throughout the day.
