AG Settlement Used To Lower Prescription Drug Costs

After winning a $420,000 settlement from two pharmaceutical companies accused of consumer fraud, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has awarded the money to a new Iowa Medication Voucher Program that will help lower-income Iowans get prescriptions for just $3.

The program will help eligible lower-income Iowans pay for medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, depression and pregnancy prenatal care.  The program will fund up to 52,000 prescriptions.
Eligible Iowans will need to obtain a voucher, present it with a prescription to a participating Iowa pharmacy, and pay a $3 co-pay.

To be eligible for the program, individuals must be uninsured or under-insured or have an annual income less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Local boards of health and county relief offices are being asked to determine hardship cases if the individual cannot afford the $3 co-pay.   Information is also available on the Iowa Prescription Drug Corporation. Health Care Commission Starts Work

State Representative Mark Smith of Marshalltown kicked-off a new health care commission of Iowans today at the State Capitol that will craft a plan to ensure all Iowans have quality, affordable health care.  Created by the Iowa Legislature last session, the commission will build on a plan started three years ago that will make Iowa the first in the nation to ensure every child has health care.

The Health Care Coverage Commission is made up of 11 private citizens and will continue work throughout the fall.  The initial report will be completed by January 1, 2010 before the 2010 legislative session begins.

New Laws Start Wednesday

Several new laws will hit the books on July 1, the start of the state’s fiscal year. Several changes were made during the 2009 legislative session that will impact Iowans, including new restrictions on sex offenders, foreclosure protection, and better health care.

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Foreclosure Protection - Iowans will benefit from expanded services when facing foreclosure, more accurate information from mortgage brokers or bankers, and active duty reservists and national guard members will have new protections from foreclosure while serving (House File 706, Senate File 355, and Senate File 364)
