Rural educator and former Mount Ayr Community School Board vice president James Uhlenkamp announced that he will seek election as State Representative in House District 24.
Uhlenkamp met his wife, Jane, in June of 1980 and they began dating in high school. The two graduated from the University of Iowa in 1986 and married that summer. Jane has been a teacher at Mount Ayr Elementary for over twenty years. The Uhlenkamps have three daughters. Emily (29) lives in Mt Ayr with her daughter, Sophia (5) and is employed by Southwestern Community College. Anne (25) is a Title I teacher at MACS and is married to Cass Hosfield. They live on the family farm in rural Ringgold County with their son, Walker (1). Katherine (24), lives in Chicago and is employed by Purdue University Global.
Uhlenkamp taught high school English and German at Mt. Ayr from 1991 to 2004, where he also served as an assistant wrestling coach. In 2001, he earned National Board Certification as an English teacher, a distinction awarded to only 53 Iowa high school English teachers. From 2004 to 2007, Uhlenkamp taught English at Southwestern Community College and currently serves as the Director of Institutional Research at Graceland University in Lamoni. In 2012 he was awarded a doctorate from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Educational Administration.
In the community, Uhlenkamp served on the inaugural Mount Ayr Teen Center board, helping to secure an endowment to ensure the center’s long-term stability. He has served on the Mt Ayr library board and fulfilled two terms on the Mt. Ayr school board, including four years as vice president. Uhlenkamp is a founding member of the Knights of Columbus council serving Ringgold and Decatur counties
