Nuclear Energy Debate Scheduled for Today

Today the Iowa House is scheduled to debate whether Iowa should build a nuclear energy plant. House File 561 establishes the regulatory construct and regulatory certainty that is needed for Iowa to attract the significant capital required for a nuclear facility.

  1. Nuclear power plants run on
    Uranium–U-238 wich has a
    Half-life of 4.47 billion years, nuclear energy requires “ongoing operating expenses, and decommissioning expenses, includ-ing storage or disposal of used nuclear fuel.” While the Yucca
    Mountain facility has been built
    to store the waste, it’s
    currently not being used as
    policy makers determine whether
    or not the facility provides safe
    long-term containment. There is currently no known safe place to store the waste.
    “I think this is a huge step for
    Iowa,” and our future generations
    taxpayers for the next 4.47 billion years.

    a diversity of the types of fuel used to generate electricity,
    2 the availability and reliability of fuel supplies, and the impact of the volatility of fuel costs.
