Member Profile: Mark Kuhn

0525807rep-kuhn-2007reducedMark Kuhn is serving his sixth term in the Iowa House. He serves as Chair of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee, and also serves on the Appropriations, Rebuild Iowa/Disaster Recovery, and Public Safety Committees.

Mark was born in Charles City on September 10, 1950. His father, Max, was a farmer and his mother, Helen, was a teacher.

He was raised on his family’s farm south of Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1968. He attended Iowa State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in history and his teaching certificate.

After college, he returned home to become the third generation to live and work on the Kuhn family farm. For the past 34 years, he has shared duties of managing and operating the family’s 770 acre grain farm. For seventeen of those years, the Kuhn family maintained a cow/calf operation.

Mark served as a substitute teacher for fifteen years in the Charles City schools. He also taught in Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock, Nora Springs-Rock Falls, and Greene schools.

He was elected to the Floyd County Board of Supervisors in 1992 and re-elected in 1996. He also wrote a column on agriculture for the Charles City Press from 1990-93.

Mark and his wife, Denise, have been married 33 years. Denise is active in 4-H and “Just Friends” programs and also works as an orthodontist assistant. They have two sons: Mason and Alex.

The Kuhn family belongs to Trinity United Methodist Church. Mark was a member of the Foster Grandparents Advisory Committee and the Free Our Communities of Unhealthy Substances Council. He has served on the board of directors of the Mental Health Center of North Iowa, the Second Judicial District Department of Correctional Services, the Floyd County Agricultural Development Authority, and the Charles City Area Development Corporation.

He is past chair of the Northern Prairie Regional Economic Development Corporation, Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health Advisory Committee, and Floyd County Water Quality Coordinating Committee.

    Please concentrate on the prevailing wage bill. Union members pay higher taxes and spend more money than non union workers. We are the backbone of the economy and we need more members for all of our constituents to prosper. Thank you Mike Berhow
