A light-rail network is where we need to go, but even 45-mph east-west passenger rail would be a good start. It should be priced affordably to attract riders and help us learn and relearn train habits. I'd like to see Davenport to Des Moines undertaken without further delay.

We appreciate the comments. House Democrats have proposed, and enacted, an incredibly aggressive energy agenda during 2007. The $100 Million "Iowa Power Fund" will help make Iowa the world leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Obviously, transportation will be a large part of the equation as we move forward. It's important that we work on ways we can improve access to efficient alternatives for middle class families as the price of gasoline continues to rise. Thank you for the suggestion!

I think one of the big things we should focus on is light rail in Iowa. While the multi state rail could provide a framework from which to build a light rail system, I think the goal should be to make travel in Iowa much easier without having to drive the automobile.

A light rail system that follows the major interstates and cross state highways would allow citizens to commute in a much more efficient manner. Centering around Des Moines, with branches heading out to Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Ames, Marshalltown, Boone, Fort Dodge, and other large cities, we could cut down on the amount of automobile traffic and pollution caused by the large number of commuters every day.

Other mass transportation would also have to be considered at the terminals to get commuters to their destination. A good bus and cab system could allow commuters to save money by using mass transportation, with gas heading above $3.00 per gallon a commute from Marshalltown could now be effective using mass transportation.

The suggested midwest passenger rail could then connect into our light rail system, and would allow travel to Chicago for a weekend or Lincoln for a Huskers game.
